Can't permanently stop an itunes download!

So I am using iTunes for the first time. I bought a $15 gift card. I have downloaded a couple of random free things to see how it works. Well it turns out there's this huge pain in the ass bug. If you start a download there is no way to stop it forever. You can "pause" the download, but it will always be there in your queue. I googled this. It's even worse than I thought. Other users complained that certain kinds of downloads, like app updates, will always try to download the old junk that you started and stopped, if you click "download all updates" even if it's a huge thing you never wanted - you cannot say stop downloadig forever and never try again.

I didn't really want to use iTunes actually. I want to download free music made by people who are voluntarily putting it out there for free, like on soundclick.com. But I don't know how to download anything onto my iPod from the safari browser. There is no "download folder" that I can find. You can only download approved files from approved sources such as the iTunes store.

I should try to find iPod apps for the illegal file sharing programs. I just don't remember what they're called and I'm not in the mood for a hassle, so I tried buying music from iTunes first.

If the murderers would let me, I would've fixed my home computer by now. I might even have my Linux installed by now and I could use my brother's music finding program that he keeps talking about, zombio. I'm really curious to see it.
